Relationships

As human beings we have an inherent need to form intimate relationships of love, friendship and support.  However, in life these relationships can often fail to meet our individual needs and expectations, leading to emotions of unhappiness, loneliness, rejection and a sense of a low self-esteem. When an individual goes through this emotional roller coaster having reliable support system is an effective coping strategy.
Types of relationships:
There are a variety of relationships in our daily life. They can be passer-by, short, between two people meeting on the street and just saying “Hello!” or they can be formal, between business people that are having a meeting.
Although the different types of relationships have very different characteristics and specific needs, there are two basic areas which seem to be critical in all relationships:

  • Expectations and Communication. What do we expect from ourselves and the other person involved in the relationship? How do we communicate these expectations, and our feelings and opinions to the person in the relationship?
